Pacific Cup Day 5 Recap – Slow Going

10:00am PDT Justin has punted the daily update to me today. We’ve had a great 24 hours, although we just did a quick check on our 24-hour mileage, and it seems low to us. We’re checking to see what might be off, because I think we both expected to be in the 160-180 mile range

Pacific Cup Day 4 Recap – Slow Going

11:30am PDT I’m waiting each day for the Daily Position Report that we receive via email before writing up the blog post. That way I have the latest race information to ruminate about. We can’t see the Yellowbrick Tracker, so the once a day 8am position reports are all we have to go by. Unfortunately,

Pacific Cup Day 3 – Ups and Downs

Yesterday was so much better. We clicked off 180 miles in 24 hours and 103 in the first 12 hours. That’s plenty good. The day was completely uneventful too. We started out blasting south with the gennaker in 15-20 knots. Max speed 11.70 knots. Then in the early afternoon we got headed and switched the

Day 2 Recap – Wind!

Day 2 Wind, finally! Wow, yesterday was memorable. I have never seen the ocean so still for so long. We barely moved for 24 hours between Tuesday evening and Wednesday evening. When the wind finally did come up we could still see 10 other boats. California Condor (for most of the evening, though they started

Day 1 Recap – We’re Off

Aloha! Well, an “interesting” first day for sure. Not typical, but not surprising, given the forecast. The start wasn’t quite what we hoped for, but I don’t think it really mattered. By the time we set off the breeze in the Bay was blowing 25-30. We knew it would be lighter out in the ocean

Follow us during the race!

We are just a little over 24 hours from our start at 12:10pm (Pacific time) on Tuesday. A few boats started yesterday. Sixteen boats start today, eighteen start on Tuesday, and then the fastest crewed boats start Thursday and Friday.  There will be 55 boats in all.  We will try to make daily blog updates to svshearwater.com,

Golden Gate fly by!

Over Memorial Day Weekend we went for a leisurely sail out to El Pacifico.  The idea was to do some downwind practice with the autopilot in some swells.  We got in some good, fast rides, but not exactly what we expected.  We made a short video of the tour of the Bay and beyond. Video

Memorial Day is Inspection Day

Straight off a flight back from 12 days in Europe for work we spent the long weekend on Shearwater getting ready for Pac Cup.  One of the big activities was going up the mast to fix a wonky deck light, tape up the spreader tips better, tape over the steaming light a little to make

First ones here! First ones here.

Cue Clark Griswold…  I’m not sure if it is 100% true, but it might be.  Shearwater is now happily tied to the dock at Richmond Yacht Club and it being more than 2 months before the start, we might the first entrants in Pacific Cup from out of town to arrive. So, the good news

On the road again…

Shearwater was loaded on a truck today (US Boat Haulers), bound for San Francisco Bay.  With luck she will be in Richmond by Friday and get her first taste of the Pacific Ocean. Preparing for the transport went amazingly well.  On Thursday we started prepping the rig for removal.  Boom off and halyards pulled back
