Follow us during the race!

July 7, 2014

We are just a little over 24 hours from our start at 12:10pm (Pacific time) on Tuesday. A few boats started yesterday. Sixteen boats start today, eighteen start on Tuesday, and then the fastest crewed boats start Thursday and Friday.  There will be 55 boats in all.  We will try to make daily blog updates to svshearwater.com, but if we don’t post something, don’t worry.  Trying to post to a blog from the middle of the ocean is on the bleeding edge of technology, and, well, sometimes, it doesn’t work.  Plus, we are racing, and might just be busy trying to go fast.

Not to worry, though because you can still follow us online at http://paccup.info/track.html.  It is free on a computer.  There is $3 charge to download the app if you want to view the tracker on a mobile device. Our tracking is done by Yellowbrick and all of the boats carry a transponder that sends positions to satellites, similar to GPS. The tracking website should update our position at least once per hour.  Be aware, for competitive reasons, the tracker will have a 6 hour delay until the boats near Hawaii. That means you won’t see us cross the start line until 6pm (Pacific time) on Tuesday.

If you look now, you will see us happily in a slip at Richmond Yacht Club. Also, these tracking devices use much of the same technology as posting to the blog and sometimes it may not work.

Do Not Worry if the tracking isn’t working or we aren’t posting to the blog. If we have a problem, we have more ways to communicate to people that would be able to assist.

We are excited and ready to get the show on the road.

There are many expressions of good luck, one of the finer expressions of good luck taken from the theater (Break a Leg). If I can extend that sentiment to Sailing.

Lene – thanks…getting closer. We’ll start heading the 7 miles to the start in 2 hours, and hopefully, between now and then, we’ll find a piece to a charger that went missing (there’s always something)! Redundancy is a very good thing.
