Day 4B – Windy reach

July 24, 2012

We got a windshift that we anticipated earlier than expected, and ended up gybing last night in 18-20 knots – the darkness, rolly seas, sleepy offwatch person and breeze always seem to add drama to anything you do on the boat.  This morning, we furled the gennaker, and we are now on the genoa to be able to point a bit higher.  We are right on course, although there is some adverse current.  With the swells hitting us beam on, it’s jostling at times.

I had pulled out our deck of cards and cribbage board, but it’s too much to try in the cockpit at the moment.  We’re mostly reading, chatting and listening to podcasts for fun.  We continue to monitor the boat, her systems and our progress, of course.  Justin’s been leaving hints that we should make some brownies, and with the weather just a little cooler today, it might be the excitement for the day!

We’ve hit the halfway point for distance, and we’re hoping that the breeze will continue to allow us to arrive on Friday morning.  Our speed has been really good with the gennaker, but it’s even been a bit better this morning, at 8-9 knots…so we might even get there faster.  We’d be ecstatic to arrive Friday morning though.

A ship passed within 3 nm last night.  We expect as we closer to the coast the shipping will really increase and we’ll be monitoring the AIS much more closely.

Current position – 41 15.38n 19 14.20w
Distance to go – 476 nm
24 hour run –  179 nm
