EOD 9 – Changes, Squalls and More Wind

July 14, 2022
Some change is in the air. Last night we followed along the left side of a squall for a good hour in mid-teens wind (5 knots more than the base), headed right towards Hawaii. A friendly squall? This afternoon we are snaking between squalls trying to take advantage of the additional wind without getting too much, or getting the vacuum behind them. It’s tricky trying to predict their path as they seem to track much more left than expected. The winds were pretty light for most of today, so we were relieved to have a 212nm day and better speed than the competition. I was worried we had our own private wind hole. It’s been interesting to see the bigger/longer waterline boats do well in this moderate breeze. I expect that will change for the next 3 days as we expect more wind from now to the finish and that should favor the lighter/planing boats. Expect a lot changes on the leaderboard.
Otherwise pretty quiet onboard. Just trying to eek out speed where we can and get the new pressure in good shape and ready for the sprint (3 days?) to the finish.
Over and out.
