Van Isle 360 – Race Tracker

May 31, 2019

Van Isle 360 starts tomorrow.  37 boats will be racing counter-clockwise around Vancouver over 9 legs and roughly 2 weeks.  This will be the first Van Isle for everyone onboard Shearwater, and we are so looking forward to the sailing, competition, scenery, socializing, and relaxing.  So far, we are off to an excellent start having seen orcas on the way up to Nanaimo yesterday and part way into day 2, we haven’t seen any clouds yet.  We literally could not ask for better weather. We passed our safety inspection with flying colors, and we met up with our fantastic shore crew, Marge and Ron.

Today, we’ll offload gear into Ron and Marge’s truck, top off on some fresh foods, attend the skippers meeting, and keep an eye on the weather for race strategy tomorrow. We’ve been talking to sailors on the other boats, which is a lot of fun. One of the neat things that the race committee is doing is to set up all the boats on five different teams for some fun prizes at the end of each leg. We’ve been assigned to Team Race Rocks, which includes six other boats across all the classes – each day, if our combined time is lowest, we’ll all get some sort of prize. It sounds like a fun way to build camaraderie across divisions and get to know more people.

The first leg from Nanaimo to Comox starts tomorrow morning at 9:30am.  There is a website tracker where you can follow along, if you like:  Race Tracker
