Pacific Cup Day 13 Recap – Curses and Mai-Tai’s

July 21, 2014

The past twelve hours have probably been the most trying for us this entire race – we’ve had exceptionally poor luck trying to get a kite up to get the boat moving fast. Hindsight 20/20, we should have just left the jib up as we did late last night and flew it into the morning, past where the skies part to show the blue skies…but of course, we did not do this. Instead, we tried to get our small spinnaker up and left our jib furled instead of taking it down altogether….a new process that we messed up and spent the next few hours remedying as we would set the chute, only to take it down again to deal with one problem or another, repack it, and relaunch. We did this 4 or 5 times. Ugh. It was so “exciting” that when I called the Kaneohe Yacht Club for our 100-mile check-in, I had to hang up on them as Justin was yelling that we had yet another problem to fix. It’s not worth detailing it all, but just know it was an ordeal. Creative curses were uttered, screamed, and yelled by both of us at different times.

…which is why we are in much more pleasant moods at the moment, less than 50 miles to go with clear, sunny skies helping make our approach quite enjoyable. No sign of the island yet, but we’re watching closely. We are very much looking forward to the promised mai-tai’s that may be awaiting us when we dock :).

We just have to get to the finish…and we’re reaching as much as possible to make it with our small spinnaker up (which is why I am watching birds in the sky out of our side ports trying to type this since Justin has the boat on its side). Come on, Alohaland!!!

Hey guys! Have been watching your progress all day long! Wow, looks like more highs than lows and more lessons learned. We are so proud of you two and this great accomplishment you so deservedly have earned. Awesome and inspiring! Great examples of extraordinary dedication, intelligence, perseverance and most of all compatibility. Enjoy your well deserved Mai Tai’s and your welcoming leis. We love you beyond belief! Your friends may think this is all you being you but for us, you’ve managed to reach for your dreams and then some. Rest well tonight on calm waters and awaken to a beautiful Hawaiian morning with gentle breezes and warm air.

    Love,
