Early bird gets the worm

February 18, 2013

I’m not sure exactly what the “worm” is in this case, but on February 6th, early entry for Pacific Cup 2014 opened and… we promptly threw our (boat)name in the hat.

Lot’s of Doublehanded boats so far = more fun for us.  Based on prior years scheduling we will likely start on the second day with the faster half of the Doublehanded boats and some of the slower/not so fast Fully Crewed boats.  It looks like our start date will be July 7th (2014) +/- a day.  The always interesting part is starting early in the week (the last start is on the 11th) and then seeing how long you can hold off the ridiculously fast (70’+ Fully Crewed) boats that start later.  On a few rare occasions an early starter has arrived first in Kaneohe Bay, but generally the big boats go ripping through the fleet and take the line honours.   Maybe 2014 will be a year for the early starters?

I read about Safety at Sea courses required for Pacific Cup in Latitude 38 http://www.latitude38.com/lectronic/lectronicday.lasso?date=2013-02-04#Story4

Indeed, we have it on our calendar to attend one SAS course and one Pacific Cup Academy weekend.

We may be heading up to Hawaii this year or next and stay for a bit…how cool would it be to run into you two?? Can’t wait to follow along on your race, so exciting!

That would be fantastic! Love following your adventures too. NZ sounds so nice. We’ll run into you somewhere (NZ, HI, WA, ???) I’m sure.

We’ve done the Pac Cup and return 3 times on our J120, Jamani, including double handed last year. We think you’ll have a great time and hope to join you boat on boat if we can make the time off. Sean

      Sean,

Thanks for the message. I’ve followed your race to Hawaii the last 2 times. I sure hope you can come along next year. Would you do it double-handed again?

Absolutely, the J120 is a great double-handed boat. My main racing buddy, Jeff (son), is in grad school and might not be able to get time off for the 2014 race. But my wife Kim has delivered Jamani 3 times with me from Hawaii so maybe I can convince her that we could also race double handed. Your experience will, I’m sure, be an inspiration for us. Best, Sean
