B 1-2 (Leg 1) – Day 3

(240 miles to go) Howdy!  Yesterday evening and last night were really nice.  A little more wind than earlier Sunday, close reaching and flat water.  Makes it easy to move about the boat and tidy up.  I’ve gone from jib top, to A0, to jib top, to new #3.  Almost close hauled now aiming straight

B 1-2 (Leg 1) – Day 2 extra edition

(303 miles to go) I‘m hiding on the beanbag, the waves are right down and the breeze is 5-10, with the jib top close reaching, so a good time to send an update.  Mostly a restful day.  Just a few sail changes as I went from jib top to A2 to A0 to A2 to

B 1-2 (Leg 1) – Day 2

(340 miles to go) Another bright sunny day.  I can hear Jason (Concussion), although it sounds like he and Solarus aren’t very close, but are close each other.   A bit of everything.  Too much wind.  Too little wind.  Too big waves.  Super flat water.  Easy sailing, hard sailing.  I flew the kite from Friday

B 1-2 (Leg 1) – Day 1

(507 miles to go) Good morning! Pretty good stuff out here so far.  It was nice getting out of the Bay and cracking off a little.  The cold front arrived earlier than expected, which was great because I was able to shift to the jib top and then the A5/A0.  As the front passed I

Spadefoot – back from the hospital

Just 2.5 weeks until the start of Bermuda 1-2 and Spadefoot is back from the hospital.  The last race of Spring Series was not a good time for the da’foot.   But thanks to an incredibly quick turnaround from Fred Lindsey at lindseymarine.com down in Canyon Lake, Spadefoot is healed and ready to go racing. 2017 Bermuda 1-2 – a coming home

Happy New Year! Another year, another adventure for Spadefoot and crew. Time to put plans to paper. The West Coast doesn’t have a monopoly on cool ocean races in the US. Spadefoot is easily trailerable, so we aren’t limited to sailing on only one coast. Possibly the most popular ocean race over the years has

Spadefoot 2.0, err… 4.0

One of the fun things about owning a one-off custom boat is that you are free to make changes whenever it seems like a good idea.  There are no “rules” to follow.  In the past 16 years Spadefoot has gone through a number of changes.  When first launched in 2000, Spadefoot (fka After Math) had

Pacific Cup – What Went Well and What Didn’t

For those of you thinking about racing across an ocean this might be a helpful: What went well for us – The Jet Boil stove with gimbal worked perfectly. Only 2 small canisters were needed. Freeze dried meals for dinner were “good enough”, and one packet was more than the two of us could eat.
